Message from Carlos - June 2015

June 1, 2015

The Texas Legislature adjourned Sine Die on June 1st, the final day of the 140 day legislative session. Sine Die is the Latin phrase meaning “without day”, and in the tradition of the legislature means “without assigning a day for a further meeting or hearing”.

I think when the dust settles we will see that San Antonio, West Texas, and District 19 had a very productive legislative session. For the first time in 17 years, San Antonio and District 19 have a representative on the Senate Finance Committee.

There are many highlights during a legislative session, and although I publically praise legislation, and funding decisions—privately, the times I cherish most are the visits with my constituents in their state Capitol. Inspiring are the dozens of school groups from District 19 walking the majestic halls of state government for the first time, knowing that one day many of them could intern, work, or serve in those same halls.

Back to School Fair Planning Underway

June 1, 2015

While it may appear that it is too soon to be talking about back to school fairs, given that we are just now concluding the current school year, I did want to share that planning for the annual Senate District 19 Back to School Fairs are underway, and my office is actively seeking sponsors to help make this year’s event the best ever.

This year I hope to participate in fairs across the district with the San Antonio fair taking place on Saturday, August 15th at Harlandale ISD’s Boggess Center from 10am ‘til 2pm. You can find a complete listing of events along with information on how to become a sponsor, volunteer, or participant at my web site, www.CarlosUresti.com/BTS.

June is National Safety Month

June 1, 2015

June is a time for welcoming a summer break from school, hosting BBQ’s, and welcoming long days with family at the lake. June is also National Safety Month, and a time for us all to commit to ourselves, and each other, that we will not text while driving.

This year, National Safety Month covers five areas of importance: prescription painkiller abuse, transportation safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness and slips, trips and falls.

All of the areas highlighted during National Safety Month are no doubt important, but I consider transportation safety to be where we could have taken the greatest strides to save lives on the state level--putting an end to distracted driving, more specifically, texting while driving. Unfortunately, as in previous sessions, a ban of texting while driving again failed to pass in this year’s session.

Sen. Uresti finance appointment bodes well for San Antonio and District 19

June 1, 2015

As the 84th Legislature completes the state budget, one thing is apparent—San Antonio and District 19 have benefitted from having a voice on the Senate Finance committee.

“When Lt. Governor Patrick appointed me to serve on the Senate Finance Committee, citizens of San Antonio and District 19 gained their first representation on the committee in over 17 years. We have a lot of needs in our community, and I have fought hard this session to make those needs a priority that’s reflected in our budget.” said Senator Carlos Uresti.
A few of the top priorities for San Antonio and District 19 funded in the budget include:
