August 2011 - Message from Carlos
The hot, dry weather may be saying otherwise, but summer — at least the vacation part — is rapidly coming to a close. That means it's almost time for my annual Back-to-School events around Senate District 19, including the "granddaddy" of them all at the Palo Alto College gymnasium, 1400 W. Villaret, on Saturday, Aug. 20.

I'm expecting up to 4,000 parents and kids at this event, which will feature food, entertainment, information booths on community resources and programs, a backpack giveaway and other free goodies for students heading back to school. Doors open at 10 a.m.

I'll also be participating in Back-to-School events at Del Rio, Aug. 5; Uvalde, Aug. 12; Rock Springs, Aug. 12; Devine, Aug. 13; and Brackettville, Aug. 16.

All-in-all, we'll give away almost 10,000 backpacks at these events, which are designed to give working families important information about local community services and get their kids excited about the upcoming school year.

None of this would be possible without the generosity and hard work of our sponsors and donors, including AT&T, H-E-B, NuStar, Port San Antonio, San Antonio Food Bank, Silver Eagle Distributors, the Texas Department of Transportation, and USAA.

To sign up for a free backpack, go to my web site at www.carlosuresti.com. If you have any questions about our Back-to-School events, please call my San Antonio District Office at 210-932-2568.

And don't forget my No. 1 rule for each event: Everyone has to have fun!

Uresti scores big on environmental legislation

Environment Texas is praising Sen. Uresti for his environmental voting record in this year's 82nd Texas Legislature. Uresti scored an 86 percent rating for votes pertaining to air and water quality.

"We applaud Sen. Uresti for being a champion of the environment," said Luke Metzger, Director of Environment Texas. "Time and time again, Sen. Uresti stood up to the big polluters and fought for healthy air and water for us all."

Environment Texas tracked seventeen votes in the Senate, including measures to require disclosure of chemicals involved in the hydraulic fracturing process of natural drilling, to promote plug-in vehicles, and to weaken the right of citizens to protect their property from pollution. Overall, the average score of Senate members was 60%.

In addition to supporting a wide range of environmental legislation, Uresti opposed efforts to export water from Uvalde and Pecos counties.

Remembering a fallen hero

San Antonio veterans will gather on Aug. 15 in remembrance of Medal of Honor recipient John E. Kilmer. A Navy hospital corpsman attached to duty with a Marine rifle company, Kilmer was killed in battle in Korea on Aug. 13, 1952, just two days shy of his 22nd birthday.

His Medal of Honor citation says Kilmer repeatedly braved intense mortar, artillery and sniper fire to aid wounded soldiers and expedite their evacuation, even while he himself was wounded. He was killed by shrapnel while shielding a wounded soldier with his body.

The ceremony for Kilmer will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the San Jose Cemetery in South San Antonio, near the intersection of S.E. Military Drive and Roosevelt. For more information, contact Vietnam veteran John Rodriguez, 210-533-8073; 210-362-8985

Tax Free Weekend

Don't forget to take advantage of the state's Tax Free Weekend, Aug. 19-21, when stores will not charge a sales tax on certain items costing less than $100, including many school supplies and most clothing. The state comptroller expects that shoppers will save more than $62 million sales taxes over the three-day weekend.

District 19 Attraction of the Month — Big Bend Ranch State Park

In a state where everything is bigger, there's no state park larger than this one. Remote and rugged, the Big Bend Ranch State Park covers more than 300,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert wilderness. The park extends along the Rio Grande from southeast of Presidio to near Lajitas in both Brewster and Presidio Counties, encompassing two mountain ranges and containing extinct volcanoes, desert, canyons, and waterfalls.

With 66 miles of trails, and primitive roadside and backcountry campsites, the park has a lot to offer those seeking adventure in the wild. Of course, food, lodging and Wi-Fi are also available at the Saucedo Complex, and the three-bedroom "Big House" provides luxury accommodations for eight.

With 23 miles of Rio Grande/Rio Bravo frontage, Big Bend Ranch makes an excellent starting point for paddling excursions. Multi-use recreational activities such as hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and mountain biking are available on trails along River Road and in the interior.
